EA Advertising and the transformation of video games into ad platforms

For years, gaming was considered difficult territory for brands to monetize outside of sponsorships and special collaborations. Today, that paradigm is shifting. With the launch of EA Advertising, Electronic Arts has introduced a new platform that allows brands to activate advertising campaigns directly within its gaming ecosystems, integrating messages, content, and activations into the experiences that millions of people live every day. The arrival of in-game advertising represents the evolution of gaming into a fully-fledged media network.

How EA Advertising works and dynamic integration in video games

The innovation introduced by EA is not just about having a brand presence in video games. Companies will be able to enter gaming experiences through dynamic content, sponsored events, virtual items, dedicated challenges, and contextual placements that update in real time. The stated goal is to make communication an integral part of the experience, avoiding the disruptive effect typical of traditional advertising. From digital billboards in EA Sports FC virtual stadiums to branded items in The Sims, the advertising message becomes part of the environment rather than an external element.
This approach rests on a well-established foundation: it is worth noting that 22.6% of European gamers already discover new brands and products through in-game ads, such as those placed within mobile games.

The parallel with the Retail Media model

For digital marketers, the interesting data point is this: EA claims to reach over 120 million players every month across its portfolio of titles. This is an audience that spends hours within immersive, highly engaging environments, with attention levels that are difficult to replicate on social media or traditional display advertising. From this perspective, the true asset is not the video game itself, but attention. Considering that media fragmentation makes capturing consumer attention increasingly complex, gaming represents one of the few spaces where dwell time continues to grow: in fact, data in Europe indicates that 21.4% of gamers spend more than 4 hours a day playing video games, a remarkably high figure that confirms the channel as a strategic touchpoint for reaching highly present and engaged users.

EA’s move closely mirrors what has happened in recent years within the world of Retail Media, where retailers transformed their digital assets into proprietary advertising platforms. Today, gaming publishers are following a similar path: leveraging their direct relationship with the user through dedicated inventory, first-party data, and measurement tools. In this scenario, EA positions itself as a video game publisher and as a media owner capable of offering audiences, targeting, measurement, and omnichannel activations. The difference compared to traditional channels is that here, the consumer is not simply watching content, they are living it.

Marketing opportunities and risks linked to community backlash

For brands, this could open up a new frontier of communication, especially toward young target audiences who are difficult to reach through traditional media. The appeal of this channel is linked not only to attention and time spent, but also to the commercial propensity of this audience: indeed, 59% of European gamers prefer to shop online.

In this context, the opportunities for businesses are clear:

  • Integration within high-engagement contexts
  • Less invasive, more contextual formats
  • The ability to create interactive experiences rather than simple ad messages
  • Access to highly loyal communities

However, there is also a risk. The gaming community has historically been very sensitive to monetization methods perceived as intrusive. Early online reactions to the launch of EA Advertising show that the balance between user experience and advertising will be a central theme in the coming years. Many users accept branding that is consistent with the gaming context, but remain opposed to interruptions or invasive formats.

EA Advertising is a signal that extends far beyond the gaming industry. Attention is becoming the primary competitive asset, and every digital ecosystem that holds a direct relationship with its audience is trying to transform into a media platform. Following retailers, marketplaces, and streaming services, gaming is now accelerating in this direction as well. Marketers will be challenged to build experiences capable of generating value without compromising the user experience, even within this new media landscape.
